Traditionally, water heaters always included a tank. The tank fills with cold water, heats the water, and stores it until the water is ready to be used. More modern water heaters don’t rely on a tank for heating and storing hot water.
Here are a few ways that tankless water heaters compare to those with a tank.
- Hot water supply: With a traditional water heater, you only have hot water to use until the hot water in the tank runs out. Then you need to wait for the tank to refill and reheat the water. This can often take longer than you’d like. Tankless water heaters heat the water on demand or as you need and use it. That way, you never run out of hot water.
- Energy efficiency: It can take a lot of energy to heat an entire tank of cold water. A tankless water heater only heats the amount of water you need, so it offers greater energy efficiency than a traditional water heater.
- Floor space: Traditional water heaters are known to be large and bulky. You typically need a good amount of floor space to have the tank installed. Tankless water heaters, however, are much smaller and can be more convenient for homes with limited floor space.
- Maintenance and lifespan: Due to the lack of a tank and not being constantly filled with water, tankless water heaters tend to last longer with easier maintenance requirements than traditional water heaters.
